🥑 Ingredients in Guacamole
- Avocados - Hass avocados are considered the best type of avocados for making guacamole, as they have a thin skin and creamy flesh. Be sure to choose ripe avocados that are darker (almost purple) in color and tender-firm to the touch.
- Garlic cloves - Adds a nice garlicky bite to our simple avocado dip.
- Limes - Gives our simple guac recipe a touch of bright citrusy flavor. It also helps to prevent the avocado from browning. I highly recommend using fresh lime juice for optimal flavor, but store-bought juice works as well.
- Salt - Brings out all of the flavors without making it salty. Season it to your liking!
🍅 Guacamole Add-ons & Substitutions
- Lemon juice. If you don't have lime juice on hand, lemon juice will work in its place.
- Cilantro. If you're Team Cilantro, add a handful of this chopped herb for fresh herby flavor.
- Add tomato or salsa. Dice 1 medium tomato and add it to your avocado dipping sauce. Alternatively, add ½ cup of your favorite salsa for extra acidity and tanginess.
- Jalapeño or red onion. For some spicy heat, add 1 finely chopped jalapeño or ¼ cup of diced red onion.
- Warm spices. Add ½ teaspoon of ground cumin and/or paprika for deeper flavor.
🔪 How to Make 4 Ingredient Guacamole
Into a medium-sized bowl, add the minced garlic, lime juice, and salt. Stir to combine.
Cut your avocados lengthwise and remove the pits. Use a spoon to scoop the flesh into the bowl. Mash the avocado with a fork until you have a creamy consistency (leave some larger pieces for a chunkier texture if you prefer). Taste the guacamole and adjust the seasoning as needed.
Serve immediately as a dip with tortilla chips or sliced vegetables, or add it to your favorite Tex Mex dish for extra creaminess. Store any leftover dip by placing a piece of plastic wrap on top of guacamole so that it's flush and no air bubbles remain (this will keep it green). Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
👩🏼🍳 Expert Tips
- Storage: Place a piece of plastic wrap on top of guacamole so that its flush and no air bubbles remain (this will prevent it from turning brown). Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- How to freeze: This simple guac recipe freezes very well due to its low water content (no tomato or onion). Transfer avocado dip into an airtight freezer bag and place in the freezer for up to 3 months. To thaw, place in the fridge overnight or on the kitchen counter for 2-3 hours.
- Choose your preferred texture: You can make it chunkier or smoother - there's no wrong way to do it texture-wise!
- Make in advance: Evenly spread your prepared guac into a shallow bowl or serving dish. To keep your guacamole green, cover the surface with a thin layer of lemon or lime juice, then place a piece of plastic wrap on top, pressing it flush with the guacamole so there are no air bubbles. Store in the fridge for up to 24 hours in advance. When ready to serve, pour off the liquid, and enjoy!
🌮 How to Serve Guacamole
Despite this being the easiest guacamole recipe, it's an extremely versatile dip that can be served a variety of ways when you're in the mood for a creamy, savory, and healthy dish. Here are some of my favorite ways to serve it:
- Pair your guac with tortilla chips, sliced veggies, and salsa for a tasty snack or appetizer
- Add a dollop to any Mexican dish, like my bean and cheese tacos, vegetarian fajitas, or pinto beans and rice for a boost of rich creaminess
- Use as a healthy condiment for your favorite burgers, wraps, or sandwiches
- Bring to your next gathering, along with balsamic bruschetta and pretzel cheese dip
